Description Overview

Reporting to the site automation manager, the senior automation engineer will be responsible for the maintenance of all site automation systems related to manufacturing and packaging operations, will oversee the associated networks and supporting hardware and software platforms, and will implement innovative solutions and technologies to ensure the continuing evolvement of plant automation systems.

Scope of the Role

· Work closely with other functional areas such as engineering, maintenance, operations, IT, and scheduling to implement changes and to investigate and resolve automation issues.

· Oversee contractor activities to ensure that overall automation design standards and practices are followed.

· Respond to emergencies and troubleshoot issues affecting day-to-day machine performance and efficiency.

· Design and implement new features and technologies to enhance machine operability, efficiency, safety, and data tracking.

· Provide strategic plans to upgrade aging and obsolete control systems.

· Complete projects within established timeframes and budgets to ensure that machine downtimes are minimized.

· Participate in the change management program to evaluate the impact of proposed activities on the validation status of control systems and support post-change qualification activities.

· Maintain automation networks and hardware including managed switches, communications gateways, and wireless infrastructure. Must be able to work closely with IT personnel to support and troubleshoot communications between automation systems and other enterprise-level systems.

· Support equipment purchases and modifications that improve plant productivity or accommodate the manufacturing of new formulations or products.

· Review technical specifications of new equipment to ensure that automation hardware and software designs align with established standards.

Experience Required

· Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline and 10 or more years of progressively responsible and relevant work experience.

· Proficiency in Allen-Bradley PLC programming and hardware design, SCADA systems, control system network architectures, communication protocols (Ethernet I/P, Profibus, Modbus, etc.), drives/servos, robotics, and control system design concepts.

· Experience with Microsoft Windows operating systems, Ethernet I/P communications, and networking components such as managed switches.

· Experience with computer system validation and change management in an FDA regulated environment.

· Experience and familiarity with current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP).

· Excellent problem-solving skills, sound drawing conclusions abilities, and ability to meet deadlines in a team-oriented environment.

· Demonstrated self-confidence and ability to interface with multiple departments, consultants, and contractors.

· Working knowledge of AutoCAD software, and the ability to read, understand, and create drawings, flowcharts, and schematics as they relate to control system design documentation.
