Description Overview
This position is responsible for developing and/or revising innovative self-care consumer goods packaging by applying knowledge of package engineering in the creation or improvement of product packaging, packaging technologies, and processes that will provide Perrigo with a competitive advantage.
Scope of the Role
- Develop and manage existing product packaging for finished goods and incoming product packaging for Global personal care products with a focus on categories like Upper Respiratory, Digestive Health, Pain & Sleep, Skin Healing, Healthy Lifestyle, Infant Nutrition, Oral Care and Women’s Health
- Work with Marketing and Sales groups to develop concepts and packaging designs that meet the needs of the customers and the business
- Serve as Packaging Development functional lead on multiple project teams as technical expert for planning, development and execution phases of projects
- Lead and influence packaging projects, cross-functionally, by providing technical input to deliver projects on time and within budget
- Identify and communicate project risks and drive resolution to overcome hurdles to meet project timing and budget
- Partner with Manufacturing/Operations and key strategic Open Innovation partners to develop efficient, cost effective and capable packaging and tooling
- Support the growth and development of the Packaging function in the areas of innovation, design, process development, sustainability, open innovation, manufacturing, etc.
- Proactively propose and offer new ideas/projects/methods to support the organization and the business
- Frequently work with external partners and industry leaders in developing solutions to technical issues, driving technology advancement, and development via Perrigo Open Innovation strategy
- Work extensively with internal customers and peers to drive project and functional excellence and process.
- Work extensively with external partners (component suppliers and global contract manufacturers) during routine project work to identify technical issue resolution and technology development
- Supervise temporary, contract or entry level associates as needed
Experience Required
- Third level degree in Packaging Engineering, Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering preferred.
- Experience required would typically come from 6 years Packaging Development and/or manufacturing experience including project management.
- Working knowledge of Packaging and drafting software including TOPS, AutoCAD, Solid Works and ArtiosCAD.
- Complete understanding and application of technical Packaging principles.
- Operate autonomously in the following areas:
- Drawing, die line and pallet configuration development
- Packaging material and finished goods specifications development
- Prototype and package mock-up development
- Planning and execution of packaging distribution testing
- Manufacturing support and troubleshooting
- Planning and execution of test protocols for packaging material and component evaluations, validations (IQ/OQ/PQ)
- Experience working on and leading projects following a documented project management process.
- Experience developing and validating packaging tooling – thermoform, heat seal tooling, etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of packaging material properties and component manufacturing processes.Knowledge of basic packaging equipment and the manufacturing environment.
- Understanding of and experience using ISO, FMEA, DOE & process mapping tools.
- Consumer Goods and/or Medical Device packaging experience a plus.
- Experience in applying and understanding of ASTM and ISTA standards for package testing a plus.
- Experience with MS Windows software (i.e. Word and Excel), Project Management software, SAP ERP systems or comparable preferred.
- Occasional travel, as required.
